Softly Now the Light of Day

Lyrics by
George Washington Doane (1824)
Music by
Carl Maria von Weber (1825)
Tune
WEBER · 8.7.8.7
Scripture
Psalm 113:3
Verse 1
Softly now the light of day
Fades upon our sight away;
Free from care, from labor free,
Lord, we would commune with Thee.
Verse 2
Thou, whose all-pervading eye
Nought escapes, without, within,
Pardon each infirmity,
Open fault, and secret sin.
Verse 3
Soon from us the light of day
Shall forever pass away;
Then, from sin and sorrow free,
Take us, Lord, to dwell with Thee.

Originally written for an evening prayer service, this hymn became a popular twilight hymn.
