William Henry Monk

English organist and composer who was musical editor of Hymns Ancient and Modern, the most influential Anglican hymnal of the 19th century. Monk composed numerous well-known hymn tunes including 'Eventide' and 'St. Matthias,' establishing himself as a central figure in Victorian church music. His careful editorial work and original compositions helped standardize Anglican hymnody.
