American composer and lyricist who pioneered gospel music in the 19th century, writing popular hymns such as "Almost Persuaded" and "Wonderful Words of Life." He collaborated with Dwight L. Moody and elevated the musical quality of revival hymns. He and his wife died in a train accident at age 38.
