John of Damascus

8th-century Syrian theologian and hymnographer whose Greek hymns were foundational to Eastern Orthodox liturgical tradition. His works were translated into English by John Mason Neale in the 19th century, introducing Eastern Christian hymn texts to Western Protestant worship. The hymn 'Come, ye faithful, raise the strain' represents his most celebrated translation.
