Swiss-French Reformed pastor and prolific hymn composer who produced over 1,000 hymn texts combining doctrinal substance with evangelical warmth. His hymns were widely translated into English and German, significantly influencing 19th-century Protestant hymnals on both sides of the Atlantic.
